Why is the replacement of a lost tooth important?

Healthy teeth and their proper arrangement not only bring us a beautiful and attractive smile, but also enable undisturbed and painless enjoyment of food, correct pronunciation of words and proper movements of the lower jaw.

In addition, the teeth significantly affect the aesthetics of the smile and the whole face, which is of great importance to all of us.

What happens in the mouth after tooth loss?

Immediately after the loss of a tooth, it is difficult to notice any changes in the mouth because they are gradual, but after some time, numerous negative consequences can be observed, which can manifest not only in the location of the lost tooth, but also in the entire oral cavity and face.

The most common of these is moving the teeth to close the newly formed cavity. The adjacent teeth lean into the space created by the loss of the tooth, while the tooth of the opposite jaw, which was in contact with the lost tooth, descends into that space. This consequently leads to an asymmetric smile, and given that the teeth do not move in a proper arrangement, spaces between adjacent teeth are created, which impairs the function of the entire chewing system, but also makes it difficult to maintain oral hygiene. Due to the impossibility of reaching hard-to-reach places, there is a risk of bad breath, gum disease and hard dental tissues.

The teeth in the oral cavity are arranged according to their function so each tooth loss leads to changes in the masticatory system to compensate for the loss. While this sounds like the remaining teeth will replace the function of the lost tooth, it should be emphasized that each tooth is destined for its own function. If a person loses one of the back teeth, one of the front teeth will have to take over its role. But the front teeth are not equally firm and it will be easier for them to crack under the masticatory forces that the back teeth would normally withstand. Likewise, due to their overload, the so-called recession, i.e. receding of the gums, which can consequently lead to hypersensitivity and damage to the aesthetics of the smile.

The arrangement of the teeth significantly affects the aesthetics of the whole face, because the teeth provide support to the face, so any loss of teeth will affect its shape. Tooth loss can result in more wrinkles and less facial tightness.

Unfortunately, tooth loss affects the bone as well. Within a year of losing teeth, bone volume decreases by 25%. That is why it is extremely important to replace the lost tooth as soon as possible while we still have a satisfactory bone volume. The longer you wait to replace a lost tooth, the more difficult it is for us to replace it later because the bone recedes more and more.

That's why already after tooth extraction, think about its replacement. Thanks to the progress of dental medicine, nowadays the placement of implants has become a daily procedure in dental offices and is the best solution for replacing a lost tooth.
