Tooth extraction

Tooth extraction is a very stressful procedure for many patients, usually due to dental trauma attained in childhood. Our mission at Smiles&More is to show you that tooth extraction can be a painless and pleasant procedure.

When and why do we extract a tooth?
Indications are diverse:
• a series of unsuccessful revisions (repeated dental treatments)
• vertical fracture of the tooth (crack of the tooth in the root area)
• supernumerary tooth
• trailing roots
• wisdom teeth that often show signs of inflammation
• orthodontic reasons
• highly mobile teeth, etc.

What does the tooth extraction procedure look like?
The first and very important step is anesthesia with which we eliminate pain. It functions according to the principle of short-term interruption of the transmission of pain information from the nerve to the brain. This ensures that the procedure is as pleasant as possible for the patient as well as the doctor. There are 2 basic types of anesthesia that we administer: minor (for upper and lower front teeth) and major (for lower back teeth). When the anesthesia starts to work, we are ready to extract the tooth.
Tooth extraction is carried out with levers and pliers in order to loosen it and finally pull it out of its socket. It is normal to hear cracking and crunching sounds during extraction, especially if it is a non vital (dead) tooth. After extraction, we clean the socket and put gauze into which the patient bites. In this phase, it is very important to form a blood clot that will allow the wound to heal and the formation of new bone. In order to keep the clot stable, it is extremely important to follow the instructions after tooth extraction.

Instructions for the patient after tooth extraction
1. do not eat until the anesthesia wears off (there is a possibility of biting your cheek, tongue or lip)
2. if you are a smoker, do not smoke for at least 2 hours after tooth extraction
3. on the day of extraction, do not rinse your mouth with any solutions
4. avoid carbonated drinks, too hot and too cold food or drinks also
5. DO NOT take pills that start with the letter A! For example: Andol or Aspirin (they increase bleeding)
6. in case of pregnancy, drink Lupocet
7. to avoid swelling, apply ice (wrapped in a plastic bag or cloth) or cold compresses to the skin above the tooth extraction site every 15 to 30 minutes
